Runs big

I love this pattern! So much that I tried it 3 times before getting a hat that I would actually wear. I checked my gauge, and it was good, but the hat came out enormous! I sized down 2 needle sizes, tried again and still enormous. I have an average size head, and my knitting gauge usually tends to be a little smaller than average. I ultimately got a normal size hat on size 11 needles. A 12 might work too.
