Confusing Pattern With Too Little Direction

The pattern is easy to read in that it separates each size (XS, S, M, L, XL) into separate sections. However, the pattern forgets to include some steps, such as ch1 after each row to begin again with the *sc dc* pattern. Later on in the pattern, one of the steps asks you to "slip 4 stitches". Does that mean 4 slip stitches? Something else? Very unclear.

I purchased this pattern as the kit from Lion Brand, but if I had seen the pattern first, I would not have made the purchase. I'm currently struggling through the pattern, but do not know if I will complete it as I anticipate having a lot of difficulty moving forwards.
