14 sts + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over Row 2.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Picot: Ch 3, sl st in first ch.

1. Cowl is worked in 3 pieces, Neck Piece and 2 Granny Squares.
2. Granny Square is worked in joined rnds, with RS facing throughout. Do not turn at beg of rnds.
3. When you see ‘– 12 sts’ in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

Ch 101.
Row 1: Working in back loops only, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch to end of row.
Row 2: Ch 2 (beg ch counts as a hdc on this row and on all following rows), turn, working in back loops only, hdc in each st to end of row – 100 sts.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 11 in. (28 cm) from beg.
Fasten off.

Ch 3, sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (beg ch counts as a dc on this row and on all following rows), work 11 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 12 dc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each st around; sl st in top of beg ch – 24 sts.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * to last st, dc in last st; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 36 sts.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 5: Ch 6 (beg ch counts as a tr, ch 2), working through back loops only, tr in same st, *dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts **, (tr, ch 2, tr) in next st; rep from * 2 more times; then from * to ** once more; sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch – 40 sts and 4 ch-2 corner spaces.
Rnd 6: Ch 3, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 space **, dc in each st to next corner ch-2 space; rep from * 2 more times, then from * to ** once more, dc in each st to end of round; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 56 sts and 4 ch-2 corner spaces.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc in each st to corner ch-2 space, 3 sc in corner ch-2 space; rep from * 3 more times, sc in each st to end of round; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 68 sts.
Fasten off.

Sew one side of one Granny Square to short end of Neck piece, gathering edge of Neck Piece to fit. Rep with second Granny Square and opposite end of Neck Piece.
Picot Edge
With RS facing, join yarn at seam ready to work around rem 3 sides of Granny Square; ch 1, *picot in next st, sc in next st; rep from * to opposite seam.
Fasten off.

Great instructions, very easy to follow pattern. Love it! Judging by the response from my friends, I'll be making several more!
