Independence Day Top Hat

Lion Brand® Kitchen Cotton

GAUGE:

14 sc = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. The Top Hat is worked in joined rnds.
2. Top of Hat is worked as a flat circle. The sides are worked from the edge of the top downwards, with increases to shape the brim.
3. Hat Band is worked separately.
4. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete st. Carry the color you're not using along the side edge of your work between stripes.
