GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTES:

1. Critters are worked in the round. Work in continuous rnds; do not join or turn unless otherwise instructed.
2. Arms, legs, ears, etc are worked separately, then sewn to Critters.

HIPPO
Head/Body

With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 5 sc in first ch; place a marker to indicate beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 10 sc.
Rnd 3: *2 Sc in next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around – 15 sc.
Rnd 4: *2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc; rep from * around – 20 sc.
Rnd 5: *2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; rep from * around – 24 sc.
Rnds 6–14: Sc in each sc around.
Change to B.
Rnd 15: With B, rep Rnd 6.
Following package directions, attach safety eyes to face.
Rnd 16: *Sc2tog, sc in next sc; rep from * around – 16 sc.
Begin stuffing and continue to stuff as you work.
Rnd 17: (Sc2tog) around – 8 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Weave tail through last rnd and gather tightly. Knot securely.

Snout
With B, ch 7.
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 4 ch; work 4 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of ch, sc in each of next 4 ch, 3 sc in last ch – 16 sts.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in last st– 20 sc.
Rnds 3 and 4: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off.

Arms and Legs (make 4)
With B, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in first ch; place a marker to indicate beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnds 2-4: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Tail
With A, ch 15.
Fasten off, knot end.

Ears (make 2)
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: (Sc, 2 hdc, sc) all in 2nd ch from hook.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

FINISHING
Stuff snout and sew to Hippo below eyes. Sew ears to top of Hippo's head.
Arrange snout to center of face and sew to face. Lightly stuff arms and legs and sew to Hippo. With A, embroider straight st nostrils on snout. Sew tail to back of body.
Weave in ends.

LION
Head/Body

With C, ch 2.
Rnds 1-14: With C, work as for Rnds 1-14 of Hippo.
Change to D.
Rnd 15: With D, rep Rnd 6.
Following package directions, attach safety eyes to face.
Rnds 16 and 17: With D, rep Rnds 16 and 17 of Hippo.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Weave tail through last rnd and gather tightly. Knot securely.

Mane
With D, ch 18.
Rnd 1: (Sc, hdc, sc) all in 2nd ch from hook, *sl st in next st, (sc, hdc, sc) all in next st; rep from * across.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Ears (make 2)
With C, make same as Hippo's ears.

Arms (make 2)
With C, make same as Hippo's arms.

Legs (make 2)
With D, make same as Hippo's arms.

Tail
With D, make same as Hippo's tail.

FINISHING
Sew mane around top of Lion's head. Sew ears to head in front of mane. Lightly stuff arms and legs and sew to Lion. With brown yarn, embroider straight st nose and mouth. Sew tail to back of body.
Weave in ends.

ELEPHANT
Head/Body

With E, ch 2.
Rnds 1-11: With E, work same as Rnds 6-11 of Hippo.
Change to F.
Rnds 12 and 13: With F, sc in each st around.
Following package directions, attach safety eyes to face.
Rnd 14: *Sc2tog, sc in next sc; rep from * around – 16 sc.
Begin stuffing and continue to stuff as you work.
Rnd 15: (Sc2tog) around – 8 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Weave tail through last rnd and gather tightly. Knot securely.

Legs (make 4)
With F, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in first ch; place a marker to indicate beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnds 2 and 3: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Trunk
With E, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in first ch; place a marker to indicate beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnds 2–7: Sc in each of first 2 sts, sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st – 8 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Ears (make 2)
With F, ch 2.
Row 1: Work 4 sc in first ch.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, work 2 sc in each st across – 8 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, *work 2 sc in first st, sc in next st; rep from * across – 12 sts.
Change to E.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, *work 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * across – 16 sts.
Fasten off.

Tail
With F, make same as Hippo's tail.

FINISHING
Stuff trunk firmly and sew to Elephant. Sew ears to sides of Elephant's head. Stuff legs lightly and sew to body. With A, embroider a straight st smile.
Weave in ends.
