GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.
French Knot
Thread needle and bring from back to front through knitted piece. Wrap yarn around needle 3 times, insert needle back into knitted piece close to where it emerged. Tighten knot.
Chain Stitch
Thread needle and bring from back to front through crocheted piece. *Hold short length of yarn on front forming a small loop. Insert needle back into where it last came out, do not pull tight. Bring needle back through work and through small loop; repeat from * until chain is desired length.

NOTES:

1. Afghan is worked in one piece including borders. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
2. Clown, Seal and Elephant charts are worked in intarsia colorwork, following charts. Use a separate ball of yarn for each color section. Twist yarns on WS to prevent holes. Do not carry unused color(s) across WS of work.
3. For intarsia colorwork, wind E into 2 separate balls and G into 3 separate balls before beginning.
4. When working from charts, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) and read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
5. Diamond Chart is worked in stranded colorwork, carrying unused color across WS of work.

The PDF I downloaded also did not have a complete pattern—the Banner Chart was missing. When I wrote the Help Center, I received an email that said it was on there, so I looked at my pattern again and didn't see it. Also redownloaded pattern and still didn't see it.

Revisited the site 8 hours later and the PDF was replaced. Banner Chart is now at the end just before the Stitch Abbreviations if you're looking for it.

I am about to start this cute pattern. I needed to adjust all the yarns/pattern/needles because none of the stores carry Modern Baby, and the weight yarn the pattern asked for only comes in pastels.

So here goes. . .
