4 (sc, ch4) groups + 9 1/2 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch

Neckwarmer is worked back and forth in rows, then joined and sts are worked around neck edge for collar.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 93 sc.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, *ch 4, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc; rep from * across – 46 ch-4 sps.
Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as sc, ch 4), turn, sc in first ch-4 sp, *ch 4, sc in next ch-4 sp; rep from * to last sc, ch 3, dc in last sc.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, sk first ch-sp, *ch 4, sc in next ch-4 sp; rep from * to last ch-sp, ch 4, sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 until piece measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beg.
From RS, with last row on top, place a marker on bottom edge, 8 in. (20.5 cm) from bottom right corner. Pin left edge to bottom edge between marker and bottom right corner (match bottom left corner to marker, top left corner to bottom right corner). From WS join yarn with sl st at side edge and sl st edges tog. Fasten off.
Rnd 1: From RS, join yarn with sl st anywhere along neck edge.
Ch 3 (counts as first dc in this rnd and in all following rnds) then work 69 dc evenly spaced around neck edge; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 70 dc.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, *FPDC in next dc, BPDC in next dc; rep from * to last st, FPDC in last st; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rep Rnd 2 until collar measures about 4 in. (10 cm).
Weave in ends.
