Flip-Top Mittens

Lion Brand« Heartland

GAUGE:

18 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.

K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (multiple of 2 sts)
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

NOTES:

1. Mittens are worked in one piece in the round on double pointed needles, with a slightly tighter gauge to produce a sturdy fabric.
2. Cuffs are worked in rib, then remainder of Mitten is worked in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd).
3. Thumbs are placed to create a left and a right Mitten.
4. Contrast color thread or yarn is used to mark the position of the flip top.
5. Flip top and thumb are worked onto completed Mitten.

RIGHT MITTEN
Cuff

With smaller needles, cast on 32 (34) sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles (for smaller size Mitten, this would be 8 sts on each needle; for larger size Mitten, 8 sts on each of 2 needles and 9 sts on each of rem 2 needles). Place marker (pm) for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist sts.
Work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds for 3 in (7.5 cm), or desired length.
Change to larger needles and work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) for 1/2 in. (1 cm).
Shape Gusset
Rnd 1:
K15 (16), kfb in next st, k to end.
Rnd 2: K15 (16), pm, k3, pm, k to end.
Rnd 3: K to first marker, slip marker (sm), kfb in each of next 2 sts, k1, sm, k to end - 5 sts between markers.
Rnd 4: Knit.
Rnd 5: K to first marker, sm, kfb in next st, k to 2 sts before next marker, kfb in next st, k1, sm, k to end.
Rnd 6: Knit.
Rep Rnds 5 and 6 until there are 13 sts between markers.
Next Rnd: K to first marker, remove marker, k1, slip next 11 sts to a holder, k1, remove marker, k to end.
Work even in St st worked in rnds on 32 (34) sts until piece measures about 6 1/2 (7) in (16.5 (17.5) cm) from beg, or desired length to fit your hand.
Next Rnd Mark for Flip Top: Holding a length of contrast color thread or thin yarn together with working yarn, k16 (17) sts, cut contrast thread or yarn leaving a yarn tail, k to end of rnd with working yarn only.
Continue to work in St st for 1 in. (2.5 cm), then work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds for 1 in. (2.5 cm).
Bind off in rib.
Flip Top
With larger needles, cast on 16 (17) sts, then pick up and k the marked 16 (17) sts across the Mitten - 32 (34) sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, pm and join to work in the rnd.
Next Rnd: K16 (17), work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds to end of rnd.
Rep last rnd until piece measures about 1 in (2.5 cm) from picked up sts.
Change to St st and work for 1/2 in (1 cm).

Sl sts for thumb from holder onto 3 double pointed needles, with 5 sts on each of 2 needles and 1 st on third needle. With third needle, pick up and k4 sts evenly spaced along hand edge, pm for beg of rnd and join - 15 sts.
Work even in St st worked in rnds on these sts until thumb measures about 2 (2 1/2) in (5 (6.5) cm).
Next Rnd: K2tog to last st, k last st - 8 st rem.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Draw tail through rem sts and pull tightly together, then knot securely. Fasten off.

Flip-Top Mittens Reviewed by Natalie Farah on 2014-10-01 *****
I also had some trouble getting the flip top part started, but figured it out after a couple tries. I ended up switching the rib and stockinette stitches for the first inch to get it to look like the picture. I also used stitch markers instead of a contrast thread to mark where to place the flip top piece. Otherwise, it was a quick and fun pattern to complete in a day.
