Free Knitting Pattern: Jazzy Knit Hat

Please note that all Lion Brand Yarn Company facilities are closed April 15, 16, 21 and 22 for religious observance. We ask for your patience regarding orders and correspondence during this time. Thank you for your understanding!

Lion Brand« Keppi
Pattern #: L32139

Whether crocheted or knit, the hat will vary in finished length according to your tension. Therefore the pattern states to work even until almost all the yarn is used.  The largest size will be shorter in length than the smallest size because more stitches have been cast on or chained in the beginning. To make a longer hat or a slouch hat, we suggest purchasing an additional ball.

GAUGE:

17 sts + 24 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

HAT
Cast on 60 (66, 72, 78, 84) sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 15 (16, 18, 19, 21) sts each on 2 needles and 15 (17, 18, 20, 21, 23) sts each on 2 needles. Place marker for beginning of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: *K3, p3; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1, slipping marker on each rnd, until piece measures about 1 (1, 1, 1 1/2, 1 1/2) in. (2.5 (2.5, 2.5, 4, 4) cm) from beginning, then work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until about 60 in. (152.5cm) of yarn remains.
Top of Hat
Decrease Rnd:
K2tog around - 30 (33, 36, 39, 42) sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Decrease Rnd: K0 (1, 0, 1, 0, 1), then k2tog around - 15 (17, 18, 20, 21) sts. Remove the marker.
Thread yarn tail into blunt needle and then through remaining sts, pull tight and knot securely.

FINISHING
Thread both of the yarn strands of pompom into blunt needle and weave to inside of the top of Hat, then to outside of Hat and through pompom - this stitch stabilizes the pompom. Draw strands back through to wrong side of Hat and knot securely on inside of Hat.
Weave in ends.

Jazzy Knit Hat Reviewed by Marilyn Hommer on 2014-01-04 *
Extremely fun yarn to work, but the pattern just is not correct. I could not get the stitch gauge to work either by decreasing the needle size or number of stitches. Also, using the whole ball for both a 12 mo. or adult- That just does not make any sense. I stopped working and am changing to another pattern.
