Classic Nordic Pullover

Lion Brand« Martha Stewart CraftsTM/MC Extra Soft Wool Blend

GAUGE:

18 sts + 23 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with size 7 (4.5 mm) needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Classic Nordic Pullover Reviewed by Marilyn Valeo on 2014-03-16 ****
Love the stranding - charts good, pattern needs some notes and correcting. I made the medium size, and my knitting is to gauge.

The sleeves at 20" were 4" too long - I ripped out to the stranding and decreased every 5 rows instead of 7. Still a little long, but ok.

16" bottom to underarm was ok for me.

I usually make raglans/fair isle sweaters from the top down, and I keep the sleeve and the bottom of the sweater to the underarm in all sizes the same measurement for good proportion. (I also use circular needles and knit the back and front in one piece. Why deal with a seam if you don't have to? On this sweater, just subtract 4 stitches from the cast off and the chart works.)

There is a ring of something in the picture above the chart. I think that is the 2 rows of plan knit after finishing the chat. Better to have extended the chart to rows 43 and 44. (Row 43 would be 2 st of one of the lighter colors and 1 st of dark color.

I do a lot of stranded knitting. The pattern calls for switching to size 8 needles for the chart - I think the purpose of that is to help keep the carry over of yarn loose. I kept with the size 7 throughout, but I stretch the stitches on the right hand side of my circular needle as I go to ensure that the carryover is loose enough.
