Fireworks Hexagon Picnic Blanket

Lion Brand® Kitchen Cotton

GAUGE:

One Hexagon = about 7 1/2 in. (19 cm) across (at widest).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

shell (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in indicated sp.
beg-Cl (beg cluster) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated ring and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (2 loops on hook); yarn over, insert hook in same ring and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
Cl (cluster) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated ring and draw up a loop, yarn over and through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and through 1 loop on hook (2 loops on hook); (yarn over and insert hook in same ring and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and through 1 loop on hook) twice (4 loops on hook), yarn over and through all loops on hook.

NOTES:

1. Blanket is made from 60 Hexagons, 12 with each Color Sequence.
2. Each Hexagon is made in 5 joined rnds. Each rnd is worked using a different color as in Color Sequences.
3. Hexagons are joined to neighboring Hexagons according to Assembly Diagram, using join-as-you-go techniques in Rnd 5.
4. To reduce the number of ends to weave in, work over the ends of the old color when working the next rnd.
5. Three border rnds are worked around the outer edge of Blanket after all Hexagons are made and joined.

3. At ch-4 corners where 3 Hexagons meet, work the ch-4 corner join as follows: ch 2, sc in ch-2 sp of next shell, ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook through corresponding corner ch-4 sp of first neighboring Hexagon, place dropped loop back on hook and draw through, ch 1, drop loop from hook, insert hook through corresponding corner ch-4 sp of next neighboring Hexagon, place dropped loop back on hook and draw through, ch 2, sc in same ch-2 sp of current Hexagon.

Fireworks Hexagon Picnic Blanket Reviewed by Lea Mollman on 2013-10-25 *****
Loved the colors but wanted more! and bigger! Added more colors of other cottons and nearly doubled the size: 51 more hexagons, finishes about 5' x 7'.

Hints for granny square-type afghans:
Use self-adhesive labels to put a letter on every skein
Use self-adhesive labels on Ziploc bags and write the number of the square and the letters in order of each round: 1 A B C D E.
Do all 1st rounds, then add all 2nd rounds, etc. Much easier when each round requires a different number or kind of stitch. Store bits in Ziplocs as you go along.
When you are ready to assemble, line up piles of squares (or hexagons) in order, 1 through whatever, with the required yarn for the connecting round. I put mine on a LARGE tray so they were portable.
