7 hdc and 5 1/2 rows = 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

With A, ch 35. Being careful not to twist ch; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Note: If you find it difficult to join the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row, then joined into a rnd, as follows: Leaving a long beg tail, ch 37, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across; join with sl st in top of beginning ch - 35 hdc at the end of this rnd. Use yarn tail to sew gap at beginning closed. Proceed to Rnd 2.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, hdc in each ch around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 35 hdc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with a sl st in top of beg ch.
Rep Rnd 2 until piece measures about 9 in. (23 cm) from beg.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through sts of last rnd and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Ch 13.
Set up Row: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 1: Ch 2, turn, (turning ch does not count as a stitch in this row or in any of the following rows).
Hdc in each st across - 11 sts at the end of this row.
Repeat Row 1 until only a small amount of yarn remains.
Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Touchdown Hat and Scarf Set Reviewed by Alva Sapp on 2014-02-06 ***
Concerning the too tight beginning row, I did the first row without a foundation chain. Directions can be found on YouTube. This takes care of the tightness. If I make this hat again, I would decrease stitches beginning with row 7 so that the top of the hat would not be as wide.
