18 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) over St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

K2, p2 Rib (worked in the rnd over a multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1:
*K2, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K2, p2 Rib worked in rnds.

With smaller needles and A, cast on 76 (88) sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 19 (22) sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnds 1-8: Work in K2, p2 Rib worked in the rnd.
Change to larger needles and work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures about 4 in. (10 cm) from beg.

Next Rnd: *
K17, k2tog, rep from * around - 72 sts at the end of this rnd.

Shape Crown (Top of Hat)

Next Rnd: Knit.
Next (Decrease) Rnd: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around - 18 (22) sts.
Next Rnd:

Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through sts of the last rnd and pull to gather for top of Hat. Knot securely.

I love this pattern! I'm expecting a baby boy in September and have been searching for the perfect baby beanie. I crochet and knit so I tried patterns for both but this one is my favorite. So fast to knit up! And I think it's going to be the perfect size for my baby boy. It's a really easy pattern and you can knit it on straight needles instead of using double pointed needles. Overall perfect pattern and I will be making more beanies with this pattern. Thank you lion brand yarn! :)
