GAUGE:

18 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in patterns.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCHES Seed Stitch (worked over an odd number of sts) Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * across to last st, k1. Rep Row 1 for Seed st. Slip Stitch Pattern Notes 1. 'With yarn in front (or back)' does not mean the RS or WS. The front is the side of the piece that's facing you as you work, the back is the side facing away from you. 2. Pattern I and Pattern II each use 2 colors of yarn called the first and second color in Pattern I and Pattern II. The specific colors you will use for each Mat are given in the instructions for that Mat. Pattern I (multiple of 12 sts + 11 additional sts) Note: Slip all sl sts as if to purl, with yarn in back of work on RS rows and in front of work on WS rows. Row 1 (RS): With first color, k2, sl 1, k5, *(sl 1, k1) 3 times, sl 1, k5; rep from * to last 3 sts, sl 1, k2. Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl the sts that were knit on the previous row with matching color yarn and slip the sts that were slipped on the previous row, with yarn in front. Row 3: With second color, k3, sl 1, k3,*sl 1, k7, sl 1, k3; rep from * to last 4 sts, sl 1, k3. Row 5: With first color, k4, sl 1, k1,*sl 1, k3, sl 1, k1; rep from *to last 5 sts, sl 1, k4. Row 7: With second color, k1, sl 1, k7,*sl 1, k3, sl 1, k7; rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1, k1. Row 9: With first color, k2, (sl 1, k1) twice, *sl 1, k1, sl 1, k5, (sl 1, k1) twice; rep from * to last 5 sts, sl 1, k1, sl 1, k2. Row 11: With second color, k11,*sl 1, k11; rep from * to end of row. Row 13: With first color, rep Row 9. Row 15: With second color, rep Row 7. Row 17: With first color, rep Row 5. Row 19: With second color, rep Row 3. Row 21: With first color, rep Row 1. Row 23: With second color, k5, *sl 1, k11; rep from * to last 6 sts, sl 1, k5. Row 24: Rep Row 2. Rep Rows 1-24 for Pattern I. Pattern II (multiple of 8 sts + 3 additional sts) Note: Slip all sl sts as if to purl, with yarn in back of work on RS rows and in front of work on WS rows. Row 1 (RS): With first color, k1, *sl 1, k7; rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1, k1. Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl the sts that were knit on the previous row with matching color yarn and slip the sts that were slipped on the previous row, with yarn in front. Row 3: With second color, k4, sl 1, k1, *sl 1, k5, sl 1, k1; rep from * to last 5 sts, sl 1, k4. Row 5: With first color, k3, *sl 1, k3; rep from * to end of row. Row 7: With second color, k2, *sl 1, k5, sl 1, k1; rep from * to last st, k1. Row 9: With first color, k5, *sl 1, k7; rep from * to last 6 sts, sl 1, k5. Row 11: With second color, rep Row 7. Row 13: With first color, rep Row 5. Row 15: With second color, rep Row 3. Row 16: Rep Row 2. Rep Rows 1-16 for Pattern II.

NOTES:

1. Center of each Mat is worked in a slip stitch color pattern; the borders are worked in Seed st.
2. Only one color is used on each row. Carry color not in use up the side edge of piece.

MAT ONE
With smaller needles and E, cast on 59 sts.
Border
With E, work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Change to larger needles and D.
Cut E.
Next Row (WS): With D, purl.
Next Row: With D, knit.
Next Row: With D, purl.
Beg Pattern I With A as first color and D as second color, work Rows 1-24 of Pattern I twice, then rep Rows 1-22 once more, for a total of 70 rows.
Cut A.
Next Row (RS): With D, knit.
Next Row: With D, purl.
Cut D.
Border Next Row: With E, knit.
Change to smaller needles and with E, work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Bind off in Seed st.
Side Borders
With RS facing, smaller needles and E, pick up and k51 sts evenly spaced across one short side of Mat.
Note: The side edge of the Mat should measure about 11 1/2 in. (29 cm). To pick up sts evenly spaced across this edge, use pins to divide the edge into 5 sections, each about 2 1/2 in. (5.5 cm) long. Now, simply pick up and k10 sts within each of the 5 sections, then 1 more st for a total of 51 sts.
Work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Bind off in Seed st.
Rep across opposite side of Mat.

MAT TWO
Note: Mat Two is worked the same as Mat One using different colors.
With smaller needles and E, cast on 59 sts.
Border
With E, work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Change to larger needles and C.
Cut E.
Next Row (WS): With C, purl.
Next Row: With C, knit.
Next Row: With C, purl.
Beg Pattern I With D as first color and C as second color, work Rows 1-24 of Pattern I twice, then rep Rows 1-22 once more, for a total of 70 rows.
Cut D.
Next Row (RS): With C, knit.
Next Row: With C, purl.
Cut C.
Border Next Row: With E, knit.
Change to smaller needles and with E, work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Bind off in Seed st.
Side Borders
With E, work side borders as for Mat One.

MAT THREE
With smaller needles and F, cast on 59 sts.
Border
With F, work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Change to larger needles and C.
Cut F.
Next Row (WS): With C, purl.
Next Row: With C, knit.
Next Row: With C, purl.
Begin Pattern II
With B as first color and C as second color, work Rows 1-16 of Pattern II 4 times, then rep Rows 1-6 once more, for a total of 70 rows.
Cut B.
Next Row: With C, knit.
Next Row: With C, purl.
Cut C.
Border Next Row: With F, knit.
Change to smaller needles and with F, work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Bind off in Seed st.
Side Borders
With F, work side borders as for Mat One.

MAT FOUR
Note: Mat Four is worked the same as Mat Three using different colors.
With smaller needles and F, cast on 59 sts.

With F, work in Seed st for 5 rows.
Change to larger needles and B.
