Softly Shaded Hat & Scarf
Lion Brand® Amazing®
GAUGE: 12 single crochet = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HAT Chain 31. Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across - 30 single crochet at the end of this row. Row 2: Chain 1, turn. Working in back loops only, single crochet in each single crochet across. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 18 in. (45.5 cm) from beginning. Do not fasten off. Fold piece, matching first row to last row. Working through both thicknesses, slip stitch across, joining first and last rows to make a tube. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail into blunt needle, then weave in and out of one open end of tube and pull to gather for top of Hat. Knot securely.
SCARF Note: Scarf is worked lengthwise. Chain 201. Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across - 200 single crochet at the end of this row. Row 2: Chain 1, turn, working in back loops only, single crochet in each single crochet across. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.
FINISHING Weave in ends. |

Scarf worked out really well, very thick and cosy. If you didn't want to make it so wide you could cut down on the number of rows and it would still look good.
Working on the back loops gives it the ridged effect but I think an absolute beginner might find it awkward at first.
