Image of Croak Skull Illusion Scarf

Illusion knitting allows you to create a pattern that's subtle when viewed head-on, but obvious when viewed at an angle. This exclusive pattern by Gina Damico was inspired by her young adult novel, Croak.

Lion Brand« Vanna's Choice®

GAUGE:

17 sts + 30 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Illusion Stripes.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCH
Illusion Stripes
Rows 1 and 2: With A, knit.
Row 3: With B, knit.
Row 4: With B, purl.
Rep Rows 1-4 for Illusion Stripes pattern.

NOTES:

1. Illusion pattern is worked following charts. Read RS rows of charts from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
2. Carry colors not in use up side edge of Scarf. Do not pull the carried strands too tightly, or one edge may be shorter than the other edge.
3. As this is an illusion scarf, the chart pattern will not be apparent when looking head-on; the scarf must be viewed at an angle for the image to appear.
4. Crochet hook is used for making fringe only.

Please note that the photo below shows the skull made with Chart 2. The skull in Chart 1 will face the opposite direction (it will be the mirror image of the photo).

SCARF
With A, cast on 30 stitches.
With A, knit 6 rows.
Work in Illusion Stripes pattern for 12 rows.

Chart Key

Chart 1
Work Rows 1-72 of Chart 1.

Fringe
For each fringe, cut 3 lengths of A and 1 length of B, each about 12 in. (33 cm) long. Fold strands in half, and with crochet hook, pull fold through end of Scarf. Pull strands through fold and tighten.
Make 8 fringes evenly spaced across each end of Scarf.

Croak Skull Illusion Scarf Reviewed by irina uskov on 2013-07-10 *****
Here is my skull scarf! It was easy to knit. In my case, I think that pattern on the chart 1 turns out better then pattern on the chart 2. I like it anyway. Thanks for the pattern.
PS. this pattern asks for 2 balls of each color. I used only one of each color.
