Cowl Neck Striped Poncho
Lion Brand® Amazing®
GAUGE: 16 sts + 20 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: To pick up sts evenly spaced along an edge, place pins or short lengths of contrast color yarn to divide the edge into smaller segments. For example, to pick up 98 sts evenly spaced around the neck opening, divide the neck opening into 4 equal-size segments. Pick up 25 sts across first segment, 24 sts across second, 25 sts across third, and 24 sts across the fourth segment.

PONCHO With longer circular needle and A, cast on 88 sts. Working in back and forth on circular needle, as if working on straight needles, knit 4 rows. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 2 in. (5 cm) from beg. Change to B, and work in St st for 2 in. (5 cm). Change to A, and work in St st for 2 in. (5 cm). Change to B, and work in St st for 2 in. (5 cm). Continue to work in St st, changing color every 2 in. (5 cm), until 12 stripes with B have been completed. Change to A, and work in St st until piece measures about 49 1/2 in. (125.5 cm) from beg. With A, knit 4 rows. Bind off. Fold piece in half lengthwise, bringing cast-on edge to meet bound-off edge. The folded piece should measure about 22 x 25 in. (56 x 63.5 cm). Beg at a corner and following diagram, sew side edges together for 13 in. (33 cm), leaving 12 in. (30.5 cm) unsewn for neck opening.
Cowl Neck From RS, with shorter circular needle and A, pick up and knit 98 sts evenly spaced around neck opening. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join for knitting in the rnd by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle. Next Rnd: Knit. Work in St st worked in the rnd (K every rnd) and Stripe pattern as on Poncho until cowl measures 7 1/2 in. (19 cm). Work in Garter st worked in the rnd (p1 rnd, k1 rnd) for 4 rnds. Bind off.
FINISHING Lower Edging From RS, with longer circular needle and A, pick up and knit 196 sts evenly spaced across lower edge (the 50 in. (127 cm) edge that does not already have a Garter st border). Working back and forth in rows, as if working on straight needles, knit 3 rows. Bind off. Weave in ends. |

| Cowl Neck Striped Poncho Reviewed by Leah Sowell on 2013-02-09 |

| As a person new to knitting patterns, this project taught me some valuable new techniques. But even though I followed the specified stitches and obtained the correct gauge, this poncho sits extremely off-center no matter how you adjust it, and one side curls terribly. I realize now that the garter stitching at the borders needs to be much wider to prevent this. This pattern still has so much potential--the yarn is the most beautiful I have ever worked with, and my finished poncho still looks lovely in spite of the awkward way it sits. I want to attempt this pattern again with a few changes to the dimensions and maybe even with the body done in seed stitch.
