18 sts + 25 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Seed St (multiple of 2 sts)
Row 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: P the knit sts, and k the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

1. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
2. Throw is worked in one piece in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with Seed st borders.
3. Markers are used to indicate the sts for the borders.

Cast on 134 sts.
Beginning Border
Work in Seed st for 6 rows.
Next Row (RS): Work in Seed st as established over first 5 sts for side border, place marker (pm), knit to last 5 sts, pm, work last 5 sts in Seed st for side border.
Note: In the following rows, slip the markers as you come to them.
Keeping the first and last 5 sts in Seed st for borders and the remaining sts in St st (k on RS, p on WS) work until piece measures about 30 in. (76 cm) from beginning, remove markers when working last row.
Ending Border
Work in Seed st for 6 rows.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.

Bright Knit Baby Throw Reviewed by Peggy Mahlik on 2014-05-14 ****
This is a very nice throw to knit, but I sure wish I would have knitted just parts of the ball of yarn and then switched over to another ball and knitted a bit from that ball and then switched again to another ball. The pattern is all pretty much the same and it certainly does not look anything like the photo given with the pattern.
