GAUGE:

10 sc = 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

If you find it difficult to join the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row, then joined into a rnd, as follows: Leaving a long beg tail, ch 46, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; join with sl st in first sc—45 sc at the end of this rnd. Use beg tail to sew gap at base of first row closed. Proceed to Rnd 2.

HAT
Ch 45, taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Sc in each ch around; at end of rnd, do not join - 45 sc at the end of this rnd. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Note: Work in continuous rnds; do not join at the end of rnds.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.
Rep last rnd until piece measures about 4 in. (10 cm) from beg.
