Cabled Sheep
Lion Brand® Martha Stewart CraftsTM/MC Alpaca Blend
GAUGE: Exact gauge is not essential to this project.
STITCH EXPLANATION: 2/2 LC (2 over 2 left cross) Sl 2 sts one double pointed needle (dpn) and hold in front, k2, then k2 from dpn.
2/2 RC (2 over 2 right cross) Sl 2 sts to one dpn and hold in back, k2, then k2 from dpn.
RT (Right Twist) K2tog and leave on left needle, then with right needle, go between the 2 sts and k the first st again.
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
M1P (make 1 st as if to purl) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Purl this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
2/2 RPC (2 over 2 right purl cross): Sl 2 sts to dpn and hold in back, k2, then p2 from dpn.
2/2 LPC (2 over 2 left purl cross): Sl 2 sts to dpn and hold in front, p2, then k2 from dpn.
Wrap 4 Slip last 4 sts worked onto dpn and hold in front of work. Wrap yarn 4 times counterclockwise around the 4 sts, slip these 4 sts back to right-hand needle, with working yarn in back of work. |
NOTES: 1. Sheep Body, Ears, Tail and Legs are worked back and forth in rows on 2 double pointed needles (dpn); Head is worked in the rnd on 3 dpn.
2. Sheep Body is knit in 2 pieces beg at bottom, then stuffed and seamed.
3. Ears, Tail and Legs are worked separately and sewn to Sheep; Head is picked up and knit in the rnd.

First Side
With A, cast on 19 sts.
Row 1 (WS): K2, p2, k1, p2, k4, p2, k1, p2, k3.
Row 2: P3, RT, p1, 2/2 LC, 2/2 RC, p1, RT p2.
Row 3: K2, p2, k1, p8, k1, p2, k3.
Row 4: P3, RT, p1, k8, p1, RT, p2.
Row 5: Rep Row 3.
Rows 6 and 7: Rep Rows 2 and 3.
Shape Neck
Notes: One st is increased near the end of Rows 8, 10, and 12 to create the Sheep's neck. This edge of the piece is the front of the Sheep, where sts will be picked up for the head.
Row 8: P3, RT, p1, k6; Wrap 4; k2, p1, RT, M1P, k1, p1 - 20 sts at the end of this row.
Row 9: K3, p2, k1, p8, k1, p2, k3.

LEGS (make 4)
With A, cast on 8 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Change to B, leaving a long tail of A.
Rows 2-6: With B, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 5 rows.
Row 7: *P2tog; rep from * across row - 4 sts at the end of this row.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely. Using B yarn tail, seam B portion of Leg. Change to A tail to seam A portion of leg.Tuck remaining yarn tails into Leg to lightly stuff it.
EARS (make 2)
With A, cast on 4 sts.
Rows 1-5: Knit.
Row 6: K2tog twice - 2 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
TAIL
With A, cast on 3 sts.
Rows 1-4: Knit.
Row 5: K3tog. Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a long tail.
FINISHING
Sew Sides together around all edges, leaving neck open. Stuff Sheep using small pieces of fiberfill and gently molding Sheep with your hands as you stuff.
Head
From RS with B, pick up k14 sts evenly spaced around neck.
Divide sts onto 3 needles, with 5 sts on the first and 2nd needles and 4 sts on the 3rd needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle, being careful not to twist sts.
Knit 5 rnds.
Stuff head lightly.
Next Rnd: K2tog around - 7 sts at the end of this rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread yarn tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
Sew Ears to head. Sew Tail and Legs to Body. With scrap yarn, embroider straight st eyes and nose.
Weave in ends.
