Smartly Striped Vest

GAUGE:

21 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS), with larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

 

PATTERN STITCH
K3, p2 Rib (multiple of 5 sts + 2)
Row 1 (RS):
P2, *k3, p2; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K3, p2 Rib.

 

STRIPE PATTERN
Working in St st, *work 4 rows with B, 1 row with A, 5 rows with B, (2 rows with A, 2 rows with B) twice, 1 row with A, 2 rows with B, 3 rows with A, 1 row with B, 2 rows with A; rep from * for Stripe Pattern.

NOTES:

1. Vest is made in three pieces: Back, Left Front, and Right Front, beg at lower edge.
2. The lower sections of the Back and Fronts are worked with A only.
3. The top sections of the Back and Fronts are worked changing color as directed in the Stripe Pattern.
4. Back neck edging is worked, as part of the Back, folded to the WS and sewn in place.
5. When you see 'work even' in the instructions, this means to continue in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.


BACK
With smaller needles and A, cast on 87 (97, 112, 127, 142) sts.
Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of K3, p2 Rib pattern.
Row 2: Work Row 2 of K3, p2 Rib pattern.
Rep last row until piece measures 4 in. (10 cm) from beg, end with a RS row. Note: End with a RS row means that the last row you work should be a RS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a WS row.
Next Row (WS):K2, *p3, k2tog; repeat from * to last 5 sts, p3, k2 - 71 (79, 91, 103, 115) sts at the end of this row.

 

Shape Sides
Change to larger needles.
Beg with a RS row, work even in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 2 rows.
Increase Row (RS): K1, M1, k to last st, M1, k1 - 73 (81, 93, 105, 117) sts at the end of this row.
Work even in St st for 3 rows.
Rep last 4 rows 4 more times - 81 (89, 101, 113, 125) sts.
Work even in St st until piece measures 7 in. (18 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.

Row 1 (RS): *P2, k3; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 4 in. (10 cm) from beg, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS):P3, k2, *p3, k2tog; repeat from * to last 5 sts, p3, k2 - 38 (42, 50, 54, 62) sts at the end of this row.

Change to larger needles.
Beg with a RS row, work even in St st for 2 rows.

Rep Row 2 until piece measures 3 1/2 in. (9 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder and side seams. Sew buttons to Left Front, opposite buttonholes.
Weave in ends.
