6 sts = about 1 in. (2.5 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
kfb (knit into front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st -1 st increased.

Cast on 15 sts.
Rows 1-3: Slip 1 as if to purl, k to last st, p1.
Row 4: Sl 1, ssk, k to last 2 sts, kfb, p1.
Rep Rows 1-4 until piece measures 20 (26 1/2) in. (51 (67.5) cm) from beg, ending with a Row 3. Note: End with a Row 3 means that the last row you worked should be a Row 3.
Next Row: Ssk twice, k to last 4 sts, ssk, kfb, p1 - 13 sts.
Rep Rows 1-4 until piece measures 40 (53) in. (101.5 (134.5) cm) from beg. Bind off.

Weave in ends. Dampen and block thoroughly to keep edges flat and even.
