GAUGE: 12 dc = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: | dc2tog (dc 2 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook - 1 st decreased. |
NOTES: To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete st.

Beg at base of Tote with A, ch 3; join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc in this rnd and in all following rnds), work 11 more dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 12 dc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in same st as join (increase made), *2 dc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 24 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, turn, dc in same st as join, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 36 sts.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, turn, dc in same st as join, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 48 sts.

Rnd 8 (RS): With B, ch 3, working in back loops only, dc in same st as join, dc in next 3 dc, (dc2tog) twice, dc in next 3 sts, *2 dc in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, (dc2tog) twice, dc in next 3 sts; rep from * to last st, 2 dc in last st; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Change to A.
Rnd 9: With A, rep Rnd 8.
Change to B.
Rnds 10-15: Rep Rnds 8 and 9.
Rnd 16: Rep Rnd 8. Change to A.
Upper Portion of Tote
Rnd 17: With A, ch 3, turn, dc in next 4 sts, dc2tog, *dc in next 5 sts, dc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 72 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 18: Continue with A, ch 3, turn, dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 19: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog, *dc in next 4 sts, dc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 60 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 20: Rep Rnd 18.
Shape Handle
First Half
Note: Handle is worked back and forth in rows.
Row 21 (RS): Ch 3, do not turn, dc2tog, dc in next 17 sts, dc2tog, dc in next st; leave remaining sts unworked - 21 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 22-28 (Decrease Rows): Ch 3, turn, dc2tog, dc in each st across to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in next st - 7 sts at the end of Row 28.
Rows 29-40: Ch 3, turn, dc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Second Half
Skip next 7 unworked sts along top edge of Tote, join yarn with sl st in next st. Rep Rows 21-40 of First Half.Do not fasten off. From WS, sc ends of handles together.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Edging
From RS, join A with sl st on one edge of Handle. Ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around side edge of Handle and top edge of Tote; join with sl st in first st. Fasten off. Rep edging around opposite side of Tote and Handle.
