Crowded Cable Shrug
Lion Brand® LB Collection® Baby Alpaca
GAUGE: 24 sts + 32 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Double Seed st with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: RT (Right Twist) K2tog and leave on left needle, then insert right needle between the 2 sts and k the first st again.
4/4 LC (4 over 4 left cross) Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
4/4 RC (4 over 4 right cross) Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in back of work, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
8/8 RC (8 over 8 right cross) Slip 8 sts to cable needle and hold in back of work, k8, then k8 from cable needle.
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
pfb (purl into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Purl the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Purl the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

SHRUG
Right Cuff
With circular needle and beg at right sleeve cuff edge, cast on 61 (65, 69) sts. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle, as if working with straight needles.
Work in Twisted Rib for 19 rows, end with a RS row.
Note: End with a RS row means that the last row you work should be a RS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a WS row.
Next Row (WS): (K1, p1 tbl) 3 (4, 5) times, *kfb, p1 tbl; rep from * to last 5 (7, 9) sts, (k1, p1 tbl) 2 (3, 4) times, k1 - 86 (90, 94) sts at the end of this row.
First Sleeve
Set-Up Row (RS): Change to larger needles. K1 (edge st), work Row 1 of Double Seed st over next 10 (12, 14) sts, place marker (pm), work Row 1 of Center Cable Panel over next 64 sts, pm, work Row 1 of Double Seed st over next 10 (12, 14) sts, k1 (edge st).
Next Row: K1, work next row of Double Seed st over next 10 (12, 14) sts, sl marker (sm), work next row of Center Cable Panel over next 64 sts, sm, work next row of Double Seed st over next 10 (12, 14) sts, k1.
NOTES
1. Sts are increased at the end of the first Double Seed st section, and at the beg of the 2nd Double Seed st section.> Incorporate the new sts into the Double Seed st pattern.
2. Two sts are increased every 6th row 11 times, and then every 4th row 11 times, for a total of 44 added sts.
3. The increases worked in the Double Seed st sections alternate between pfb and kfb. In every other increase row a pfb is worked and in every other increase row a kfb is worked. You can follow the detailed increase instructions below, or you may find that after a few increases you understand the pattern of increases and no longer need to refer to the pattern for each increase.
4. First and last st are knit on every row. These edge sts will be used in seaming.

Change to circular needle and work in Twisted K1, p1 Rib until left cuff measures same as right cuff. Bind off.
FINISHING
Seam Sleeves
Note: Our sample was finished using sl st crochet for the seams, following instructions below. The sl st provided a firm seam for this soft yarn. If you prefer, seams can be sewn rather than crocheted together. We suggest you back st the seam rather than using mattress st.
With RS tog, fold piece in half bringing side edges tog. From WS, join yarn with sl st at cuff edge and working through both thicknesses, sl st evenly spaced across to the end of sleeve marker. Fasten off. Rep to seam other sleeve.
Border
NOTES
1. The number of sts to be picked up for the front border worked well for our samples. If you prefer, pick up more or fewer sts, just be sure to pick up an odd number of sts.
2. To pick up sts evenly, use pins or scrap yarn to divide the edge along which you will pick up sts into equal segments. For example, to pick up 120 sts along an edge, divide the edge into 10 equal segments then pick up 12 sts across each segment.
3. Instructions are for picking up sts using a crochet hook. If you prefer, use circular needle to pick up sts directly from the Shrug.
From RS, with crochet hook, picking up 3 sts for every 4 rows and placing sts onto circular needle, pick up and k120 (130, 144) sts across top edge, pick up and k120 (130, 144) sts across lower edge. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle.
Work in Twisted Rib worked in rnds for 19 rnds.
Bind off in rib but do not fasten off last loop.
Edging
Place rem loop on crochet hook, and with crochet hook, work 1 sl st in first k1 rib, *ch 3, sl st in next k1 rib; rep from * around. Fasten off.
Weave in ends. |

| Crowded Cable Shrug Reviewed by Coral Bentley on 2013-04-05 |

I'm using a different yarn, giving a different gauge, so that might explain the difference I'm finding in the rate of increases even though I worked it out comparing gauges.
The Right Twist is given as the middle 'stripe' for both of the paired cable twists flanking the large central cable. I wanted a left twist, so it would better mirror the right. I've been using (skip first stitch, knit in back loop of the second, then front loop of the first, and slide both stitches off the needle) for the right-side row.
Also, the cables were really tight (could be gauge/yarn difference). I saw a trick in a video about how to cable in Tunisian crochet, to place a yarn over in the row before cabling (row 8 and 18 of pattern), between the right and left parts of the section, and it lets my 4/4RC and 4/4LC lie flatter, giving some ease to the fabric. I need to use the yarn over trick for three rows before cabling the 8/8RC to give enough ease, and the appearance is greatly improved.
Time to rip back to the beautiful cuffs, and change my rate of increase!
