GAUGE: 16 sc + 9 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm), in Bag pattern, with smaller hook and 2 strands of yarn held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: rev sc (reverse single crochet) Single crochet worked from left to right (right to left, if left-handed). Insert hook into next stitch to the right (left), under loop on hook, and draw up a loop. Yo, draw through all loops on hook.

Eyelet Rnd 1: Ch 2, turn, hdc in first st, *ch 1, skip next st, hdc in next st; rep from * to last st, ch 1, sk last st, join with sl st in first st.
Rep Rnd 1 of sides until piece measures 3 in. (7.5 cm) above base, then rep Eyelet Rnd 1.
Rep Rnd 1 of sides until piece measures 6 in. (15.2 cm) above base.
Eyelet Rnd 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st; rep from * to last st, ch 1, sk last st, join with sl st in first st.
Next Rnd: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn, dc in sc, dc in ch-1sp, around, join with sl st in beg ch.
Next Rnd: Ch 1, turn, *sc in first st, picot in next st; rep from * around, join with sl st in first st.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Drawstring
Make a ch 21 in. (53.5 cm) long.
Sl st into 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end, fasten off.
Weave Drawstring through Eyelet Rnd 2.
Weave in ends.
SHAWL
With larger hook and 2 strands of yarn held together, ch 47.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 5, skip 4 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across - 9 ch-5 sps.
Row 2: Ch 5, turn, picot in 3rd ch of first ch-5 sp, *ch 5, picot in 3rd ch of next ch-5 sp; rep from * 7 more times, ch 2, dc in last sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, *ch 5, picot in 3rd ch of next ch-5 sp; rep from * 7 more times, ch 5, sc in 3rd ch of last ch-5 sp.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until piece measures 60 in. (152.5 cm) from beginning, end with Row 2.
Next Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, *ch 5, sc in 3rd ch of next ch-5 sp; rep from * 8 more times. Do not fasten off.
FINISHING
Border
Continuing with 2 strands, ch 1, sc evenly around all edges of Shawl, working 3 sc in each corner; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
