GAUGE:

26 sts + 32 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

SLIPPER (make 2)
Cast on 20 sts.
Row 1: K10, knit into front and then back of the next st to increase 1 st, k9 - you will have 21 sts at the end of this row.

Notes
1. On Rows 1-9, you are increasing sts on every RS row. On Rows 31-40, you are decreasing sts on every RS row. The number of sts shown at the end of a row tells you how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
2. When you see 'twice' on Rows 5 and 7, this means that you should work the instructions that are enclosed in the parentheses twice.
3. Working both k2tog and ssk as decreases on Rows 31-39 creates decorative 'mirrored' decreases. If you prefer, simply work a k2tog for all of the decreases.

Row 2 and all WS rows until beginning of toe shaping: Purl.
Row 3: K9, kfb, k1, kfb, k9 - 23 sts.
Row 5: K9, (kfb in next st, k1) twice, kfb, k9 - 26 sts.
Row 7: K9, (kfb in next st) twice, k4, (kfb in next st) twice, k9 - 30 sts.
Row 9: K15, kfb in next st, k14 - 31 sts.
Size adjustment can be made in the following section of the Slipper.
To make the Slipper about 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) long, work Rows 10-30.
To shorten the Slipper, work less rows before shaping toe; to lengthen the Slipper, work additional rows of St st before shaping toe.

Rows 10-30: Work even in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
Beginning with the next section of the Slipper, you will change from working in St st to working in Garter st (k every row).
Shape Toe
Row 31: K7, k2tog, k13, ssk, k7- 29 sts.
Rows 32, 34, 36 and 38: Knit.
Row 33: K6, k2tog, k13, ssk, k6 - 27 sts.
Row 35: K5, k2tog, ssk, k9, k2tog, ssk, k5 - 23 sts.
Row 37: K4, k2tog, ssk, k7, k2tog, ssk, k4 - 19 sts.
Row 39: K3, k2tog, ssk, k5, k2tog, ssk, k3 - 15 sts.
Row 40: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to last 3 sts, k3 -12 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through the remaining 12 sts and pull to gather. Continuing with same yarn tail, sew edges of Slipper together for about 2 in. (5 cm) along top of foot.

STRAP (make 2)
Cast on 5 sts.
Work in Garter st until Strap measures 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from beginning.
Buttonhole Row: K1, k2tog, yo, (the k2tog + the yo form a small hole, this will be the buttonhole), k2. Work 5 more rows in Garter st. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING
Fold cast-on edge of Slipper in half and sew closed for heel. Wrap the Strap completely around the Slipper, going across the sole. With yarn and large eyed blunt needle, sew Strap to Slipper. The portion of the Strap that crosses the top of the foot will remain unsewn.
With sewing needle and thread, sew the button to the Slipper, opposite the buttonhole.
Note: Buttons should be sewed on very securely, to safeguard baby from loose buttons.
Weave in ends.
