STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - 1 st increased.
NOTES:
1. Due to the nature of the felting process, the size of your finished pieces can vary.
2. Pencil Case is worked with 2 strands of yarn held tog.
PENCIL CASE
With larger needles and 2 strands of A held tog, cast on 20 sts.
Beg with a WS (purl) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 42 rows, for front of case. Next Row (WS): Knit, for fold line.
Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st for 43 rows for back of Case. Next Row (WS ): Knit, for fold line. Shape Flap
Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st for 2 rows. Next Row (RS): K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog - 18 sts at the end of this row. Next Row: P2tog, p to last 2 sts, p2tog - 16 sts at the end of this row. Next Row: K2tog, k4, bind off next 4 sts (for buttonhole), k4, k2tog. Next Row: P2tog, p3, cast on 4 sts over the bound-off sts of previous row, p3, p2tog - 12 sts at the end of this row. Next Row: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog - 10 sts. Next Row: P2tog, p to last 2 sts, p2tog - 8 sts.
Rep last 2 rows once more - 4 sts rem. Next Row: (K2tog) 2 times - 2 sts. Next Row: P2tog.
Fasten off.
ACORN
Cap
With smaller needles and 1 strand of B, cast on 4 sts. Row 1: (Kfb) 4 times - 8 sts. Row 2: Kfb, k to last st, kfb -10 sts. Row 3: Rep Row 2 - 12 sts. Rows 4-6: Knit. Row 7: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog - 10 sts. Acorn
Change to C. Rows 8-13: Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st. Row 14 (RS): K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog - 8 sts. Row 15: Purl. Row 16: Rep Row 14 - 6 sts. Rows 17 and 18: Rep Rows 15 and 16. Row 19: (P2tog) twice - 2. Row 20: K2tog.
Fasten off.
LEAF
Beg at base of Leaf, with smaller needles and 1 strand of D, cast on 3 sts. Row 1: Knit. Row 2: Kfb, k1, kfb - 5 sts. Rows 3-5: Knit. Row 6: K2tog, k1, k2tog - 3 sts. Row 7: Knit. Row 8: K3tog - 1 st.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Fold front of Case along fold line and seam sides. Felt
Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. Remove from machine when felted to your satisfaction and pull into shape. Allow to dry.
With sewing needle and thread, sew button to front of Case, opposite buttonhole. Sew Acorn to lower right front of Case. With B, make a small loop on top of Acorn for stem. Sew Leaf to Case at stem. Weave in ends.
