Tranquil Violet Hat

Lion Brand® Cotton-Ease®

17 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle. 3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

K2, p2 Rib (worked in rnds)
Rnd 1:
*K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Rnd 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

1. Hat is worked in rnds from top of hat (crown) downwards.
2. Increases (kfb) are worked evenly spaced in every other rnd to shape Hat.

Beg at crown, cast on 6 sts onto 1 double pointed needle.
Row 1: *Kfb; rep from * to end of row - 12 sts at the end of this rnd. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K1, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd - 18 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: Knit.
Rnd 4: *K2, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd - 24 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 5: Knit.
Rnd 6: *K3, kfb, place marker (pm); rep from * to end of rnd - 30 sts at the end of this rnd.
Note: Markers indicate where increases (kfb) will be worked.
In following rnds, slip markers as you come to them.
Use different colored markers for the beg of rnd and for increase locations.
Rnd 7: Knit.
Rnd 8: *K to 1 st before marker, kfb, slip marker (sm); rep from * around - 36 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 9-26: Rep Rnds 7 and 8 nine times - 90 sts at the end of Rnd 26.
Note: Remove increase markers as next rnd is worked.
Rnd 27: (K43, k2tog) 2 times - 88 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next 16 Rnds: Knit.
Work in K2, p2 Rib for 6 rnds.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.

Tranquil Violet Hat Reviewed by Emily on 2011-05-19 *****
I only started knitting last month, so I wasn't sure if this hat would be easy enough. This was my first project with double pointed needles, and although I found it slightly confusing at first, I quickly figured out what to do. I'm almost done with this hat now and I'm really pleased with how cute it is. I think they need a picture of the top of the hat so people can see how pretty it is. I used azalea cottonease.

One tip - once I got past the last row of increases, I moved the stitches over to a fourth needle so that I had 22 stitches per needle - knitting with the fifth. I think it would be even easier to move to circular needles at that point, although having it on three needles at first really helped in keeping track of the increase areas. I watched a short video on the kfb stitch, and on dp needles and then I gave it a try. I will definitely make this one again.
