GAUGE:

13 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern, with 2 strands of yarn held tog.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Works up beautifully and quickly! I only cast on about 130 stitches on circular needles and I only used one string of yarn instead of two at a time. I'm sure using two would look nice too but I didn't want to make my scarf that thick/bulky. I also used a self striping yarn in purple-y colors and the pattern how's up very nicely. Definitely recommend this pattern for beginners (this is only my second completed project).
