1 ripple = about 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

dc2tog (dc 2 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

If you find it difficult to join the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row, then joined into a rnd, as follows: Ch 201, beg in 4th ch from hook (beg ch counts as dc), work (dc2tog) 3 times, 2 dc in next 6 ch, *(dc2tog) 6 times, 2 dc in next 6 ch; rep from * across to last 6 ch, (dc2tog) 3 times; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Proceed to Rnd 2. When weaving in ends, use the beg tail to sew ends of first row together.

Ch 199. Taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, over next 6 ch, (dc2tog) 3 times, 2 dc in next 6 ch, *over next 12 ch, (dc2tog) 6 times, 2 dc in next 6 ch; rep from * across to last 6 ch, over last 6 ch, (dc2tog) 3 times; join with sl st in top of turning ch - 11 ripples at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 2-16: Ch 3 (turning ch), turn, (dc2tog) 3 times, 2 dc in next 6 dc, *(dc2tog) 6 times, 2 dc in next 6 dc; rep from * across to last 6 dc, (dc2tog) 3 times; join with sl st in top of turning ch.
Fasten off.

Candy Color Ripple Cowl Reviewed by Ayla on 2015-01-20 *****
I've made 7 of these cowls in various colorways - 2 for myself, and 5 as gifts. I love it! The cowl works up quickly, the pattern is simple, and the Amazing yarn colorways make the cowls lovely.
