GAUGE:

One Square = 12 x12 in. (30.5 x 30.5 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Granny Throw Reviewed by Joann Branson on 2012-12-29 *****
Well, I followed everyone's advice on here, and made extra squares -- my afghan was 4 x 5 squares instead of 3 x 4 squares. And my finished afghan was HUGE! It would have been plenty big with just 12 squares, as the pattern recommends. Take my advice and CHECK YOUR GAUGE and use a bigger hook if necessary. It will save you a lot of money on yarn.
