GAUGE:
17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
NOTES:
Sleeves are knit separately in the round. Body is worked in the round, beginning at lower edge. Sleeves and Body are joined to form the yoke (upper portion of the sweater), and the decreases in the yoke are designed to create a subtle pattern.
SLEEVE (make 2)
With double-pointed needles, cast on 40 (40, 42, 42, 44) sts. Divide sts evenly onto 4 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in Garter st worked in the rnd (k 1 rnd, p 1 rnd) for 6 rnds.
Change to St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) and work until piece measures about 4 1/2 (5 1/2, 6 1/2, 8 1/2, 10) in. (11.5 (14, 16.5, 21.5, 25.5) cm) from beg. Slip sts to a holder. Rep for 2nd Sleeve.
BODY
With circular needle, cast on 86 (90, 98, 102, 110) sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Beg at lower edge of Body, work in Garter st worked in the rnd for 6 rnds.
Change to St st worked in the rnd and work until piece measures about 5 (6, 6 1/2, 7, 8) in. (12.5 (15, 16, 17, 19.5) cm) from beg.
Join Sleeves
Next Rnd: Bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s), k41 (43, 43, 47, 49) for front, bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s); work across sts of one Sleeve as follows: bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s), k to last 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) Sleeve st(s), bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s); working across Body, bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s), k41 (43, 43, 47, 49) for back, bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s); remove beg of rnd marker, working across sts of 2nd Sleeve, bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s), k next 19 sts, place marker (this is now the beg of rnd marker), k to last 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s) of Sleeve, bind off 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st(s) - 158 (162, 166, 170, 174) sts at the end of this rnd.

Round Yoke Baby Sweater Reviewed by Patricia Lunde on 2012-11-16
Love the look of the pattern; but there was no way the sleeves were going to be knit into the body of the sweater the way the pattern is written. I stretched the yarn to breaking point, I tried extra needles to try to put the sleeves onto the body, nothing worked. I ripped it all out & threw this pattern out.
