GAUGE:

17 sts + 34 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Yoke and sleeves are knit in one piece, from sleeve cuff to sleeve cuff. Stitches are then picked up along lower edges of yoke for back and fronts.
2. Yarn over (yo) creates a new loop on your needle and is worked by wrapping the yarn around your right hand needle. Do not use an existing stitch to make a yarn over. Yarn overs are used to create buttonholes in this design.

Great Starter Project Reviewed by Jenna Davito on 2014-11-02 ****
This was the first sweater that I attempted to make and it turned out pretty good. It definitely gave me some practice, especially with the "pick up and knit" stitch, as well as the seaming. I added some decorative stitches and different colors and textures. Pretty cute!
