GAUGE:
18 sts + 22 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
Pattern is designed to encourage creativity with freeform embroidery. If desired, use masking tape to mark lines across surface of Cowl. Embroider a line of straight sts along one edge of tape, then move tape to mark next line. Change color as desired for embroidery.
COWL
With A, cast on 114 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join, being careful not to twist sts.
Work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) for 1 in. (2.5 cm).
Next (Turning) Rnd: Purl.

FINISHING

This pattern is SO simple! If you have a really fun multi-colored or dual-colored yarn, the embroidery is really not necessary. However, it is simple, warm, and looks really cute. It's a great gift to give to the person who has WAY too many scarves and NOT enough cowls!!! The only thing to be aware of is to NOT twist the yarn in the beginning inch of knitting.
