GAUGE:

18 hdc = about 4 in. (10 cm) with smaller hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BAND
With smaller hook, ch 26 (28, 31, 33, 36).
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across – 24 (26, 29, 31, 34) hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep last row until piece measures 33 (37, 41, 45, 49) in. (84 (94, 104, 114, 124.5) cm) from beg. Fasten off.
Overap the short ends of Band by 1 in. (2.5 cm) and pin to form center back. Sew along one long edge of the overlapped section to secure the 2 layers together along that edge only. Bodice sts will be worked along this joined edge. Overlapped section is center back.
Bodice
From RS with smaller hook, join yarn with sl st at center back.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 122 (138, 154, 170, 186) hdc evenly spaced around lower edge of Band; join with sl st in first hdc.
Rnds 2–4: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in first hdc.
Change to larger hook, and rep last rnd until Bodice measures 13 (14, 15, 16, 17) in. (33 (35.5, 38, 40.5, 43) cm) from beg. Fasten off.

Straps
Mark center 6 (6, 6 1/2, 6 1/2, 7) in. (15 (15, 16.5, 16.5, 18) cm) along top front edge of Band.
Right Strap
From RS with smaller hook, join yarn with sl st at left edge of the marked center section.
Row 1: Ch 2, work 13 (15, 15, 18, 18) hdc evenly spaced across 3 (3 1/2, 3 1/2, 4, 4) in. (7.5 (9, 9, 10, 10) cm) towards side edge of Band.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep last row until Strap measures 18 (18, 18, 19, 19) in. (45.5 (45.5, 45.5, 48.5, 48.5) cm) from beg. Fasten off.
Left Strap
From RS with smaller hook, join yarn with sl st 3 (3 1/2, 3 1/2, 4, 4) in. (7.5 (9, 9, 10, 10) cm) to right of the marked center section.
Row 1: Ch 2, work 13 (15, 15, 18, 18) hdc evenly spaced across to marked section.

FINISHING

Sea Breeze Top Reviewed by Donna on 2011-10-09 *****
I love this pattern so much that I made myself 3, and one for each of two sisters and one for my little granddaughter. We all wore them to a reunion. I added a trim of reverse single crochet around all edges. I made one of them to button in the front.
