GAUGE:

18 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

2/2 PLC (2 over 2 purl left cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, p2, then k2 from cable needle.
2/2 PRC (2 over 2 purl right cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then p2 from cable needle.
2/1 PLC (2 over 1 purl left cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, p1, then k2 from cable needle.
2/1 PRC (2 over 1 purl right cross) Slip 1 st to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then p1 from cable needle.
1/1 PLC (1 over 1 purl left cross) Slip 1 st to cable needle and hold in front, p1, then k1 from cable needle.

This is a beautiful pattern, but I did find some mistakes in the trees chart. On row 19, stitch #36, row 33, stitch #8, and row 41, stitch#20, the chart shows these as a knit stitches on the RS, and they should be a purl stitches on the RS for the pattern to make sense.

Also, I had some trouble with the 2/2 LC and 2/2 RC cables. According to the chart, these use knit stitches on the WS (and thus are purl stitches on the RS), and they should come out as knit stitches on the RS.
