Honeycomb Poncho

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

30 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in honeycomb pattern with larger needle. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

2/2 RC (2 over 2 right cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle.

PATTERN STITCHES

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from *.
Rep Rnd 1 for k1, p1 Rib.

Honeycomb (multiple of 8 sts + 4)
Row 1: P2, *2/2 RC, 2/2 LC; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.

Rows 3 and 7: P2, k to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 5: P2, *2/2 LC, 2/2 RC; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 8: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep Rows 1-8 for Honeycomb pattern.

NOTES:

1. Circular needle is used for ease in working with large number of sts. Work back and forth (as if working on straight needles) in rows on Front and Back.
2. Collar is worked in rounds.

BACK
With larger needle, cast on 136 sts. Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Set Up Row (RS): K22, place marker, p2, inc in each of next 4 sts, *k1, inc in next st, rep from * to last 28 sts, inc in each of next 4 sts, p2, place marker, k22 – 184 sts.
Next Row: K22, slip marker, k2, p136, k2, slip marker, k22.
Next Row: K22, sl marker, work Row 1 of Honeycomb pattern to next marker, sl marker, k22.
Continue as established, working first and last 22 sts in Garter st, and sts between markers in Honeycomb pattern until piece measures 40 in. (101.5 cm) from beg. Bind off.

FRONT
Work same as Back until piece measures 37 in. (94 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Neck
Work as established across first 80 sts, join a new ball of yarn and bind off center 24 sts, work to end of row. Working both sides at once with separate strands of yarn, and keeping to pattern as established, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 4 times – 76 sts each shoulder.
When piece measures same length as Back, bind off.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Collar
From RS with smaller needle, pick up and k 90 sts. Join, being careful not to twist st. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work in k1, p1 Rib for 12 in. (30.5 cm). Bind off loosely. Weave in ends.

Honeycomb Poncho Reviewed by Glennyce Moerman on 2010-01-08 *****
Just finished thie Honeycomb Poncho and am very pleased with the results. I did the entire project with the circular needles and had never used cable needles before. What a helpful item. I did not make the neck 12 inches however because it seemed too much. Made mine 6 inches and love it that size for me. Don't have a picture but will send one if I get one. I made mine with the wheat/multi yarn and it goes with everything. Yarn very easy to work with.
