Honeycomb Poncho

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

30 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in honeycomb pattern with larger needle. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

2/2 LC (2 over 2 left cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k2, then k2 from cable needle.
2/2 RC (2 over 2 right cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle.

PATTERN STITCHES
K1, p1 Rib (worked in the round)
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from *.
Rep Rnd 1 for k1, p1 Rib.

Honeycomb (multiple of 8 sts + 4)
Row 1: P2, *2/2 RC, 2/2 LC; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Rows 2 and all WS rows: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Rows 3 and 7: P2, k to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 5: P2, *2/2 LC, 2/2 RC; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 8: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep Rows 1-8 for Honeycomb pattern.

NOTES:

1. Circular needle is used for ease in working with large number of sts. Work back and forth (as if working on straight needles) in rows on Front and Back.
2. Collar is worked in rounds.

BACK
With larger needle, cast on 136 sts. Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Set Up Row (RS): K22, place marker, p2, inc in each of next 4 sts, *k1, inc in next st, rep from * to last 28 sts, inc in each of next 4 sts, p2, place marker, k22 – 184 sts.
Next Row: K22, slip marker, k2, p136, k2, slip marker, k22.
Next Row: K22, sl marker, work Row 1 of Honeycomb pattern to next marker, sl marker, k22.
Continue as established, working first and last 22 sts in Garter st, and sts between markers in Honeycomb pattern until piece measures 40 in. (101.5 cm) from beg. Bind off.

FRONT
Work same as Back until piece measures 37 in. (94 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Neck
Work as established across first 80 sts, join a new ball of yarn and bind off center 24 sts, work to end of row. Working both sides at once with separate strands of yarn, and keeping to pattern as established, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 4 times – 76 sts each shoulder.
When piece measures same length as Back, bind off.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Collar
From RS with smaller needle, pick up and k 90 sts. Join, being careful not to twist st. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work in k1, p1 Rib for 12 in. (30.5 cm). Bind off loosely. Weave in ends.

Honeycomb Poncho Reviewed by Tamela Sowers on 2009-11-07 *****
I'm halfway through with this project. The pattern knits up beautifully. I started with the circular needles, but found using 13" straight needles much easier for the cables. Cables are difficult for me when everything is limp on the circular needles. The straight needles give more stability and better stitch control. I'm also thinking of making a garter stitch sash to keep the poncho closer to the body on windy days. I may even do this in black, tan and denim blue.
