GAUGE:

16 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Chance of Flurries Hat Reviewed by C C on 2013-01-21 ****
Knitted this for a sweet man who needed something cosy for winter chemo. I heeded warnings that the pattern knits up small, and I tend to knit tightly. So, I used a slightly heavier gauge wool roving and 10.5/11 needles, nixed the (albeit cute!) pompom and reversed colour just before decreasing. It's nice and roomy. A cute, warm, versatile pattern!
