Simple Baby Set

GAUGE:
12 half double crochet + 9 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
CARDIGAN
BACK Chain 32 (34, 37, 40).
Row 1: Work a half double crochet in the 3rd chain from hook and each chain across – 30 (32, 35, 38) half double crochet at the end of this row.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Work a half double crochet in each half double crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9 1/2 (10 1/2, 11 1/2, 13) in. (24 (26.5, 39, 33) cm) from beginning. Fasten off.
FRONTS (make 2) Chain 20 (21, 22, 24)
Row 1: Work a half double crochet in the 3rd chain from hook and each chain across – 18 (19, 20, 22) half double crochet at the end of this row.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Work a half double crochet in each half double crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece is the same length as the Back. Fasten off.
SLEEVES (make 2) Chain 26 (29, 32, 35).
Row 1: Work a half double crochet in the 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across – 24 (27, 30, 33) half double crochet.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Work a half double crochet in each half double crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 5 (5 1/2, 6 1/2, 7 1/2) in. (12.5 (14, 16.5, 19) cm) from beginning. Fasten off.
FINISHING Seam shoulders for 2 1/2 (2 1/2, 2 3/4, 3) in. (6.5 (6.5, 7, 7.5) cm) as shown on diagram, leaving 5 (5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2) in. (10 (14, 15, 16.5) cm) open for Back neck.
Place markers 4 (4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2) in. (10 (11.5, 12.5, 14) cm) down from shoulders on Front and on Back. Sew Sleeves between markers. Sew side and Sleeve seams.
Sew on buttons. Use spaces in between sts for buttonholes.
Weave in ends.
HAT Chain 38 (41, 44, 47).
Row 1: Work a half double crochet in the 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across – 36 (39, 42, 45) half double crochet.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Work a half double crochet in each half double crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 6 (6 1/2, 7, 7 1/2) in. (15 (16.5, 18, 19) cm) from beginning. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
FINISHING Fold Hat in half, bringing side edges tog. Thread yarn tail into large-eyed needle and sew stitches of last row tog for back seam.
Ties Chain 24 (24, 30, 30) for tie, then work half double crochet across neck edge of Hat, then chain 24 (24, 30, 30) for 2nd tie. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
BOOTIES (make 2) Chain 15 (17).
Row 1: Work a half double crochet in the 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Work a half double crochet in each half double crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 3 (4) in. (7.5 (10) cm) from beginning. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
FINISHING Thread yarn tail into large-eyed needle, then weave through stitches of last row and pull together tightly for toe. With same tail, and beginning at toe, seam edges together for about 2 in. (5 cm) for top of foot.
At opposite end of Bootie, seam edges from top edge to about halfway down for heel. Flatten remaining opening at heel and sew across, forming a T-shaped back seam.
Edging With the right side facing, join yarn with a slip stitch at top of heel seam. Chain 2, work half double crochet evenly spaced around this edge; join with a slip stitch in first half double crochet. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

Easy and really cute! Because the size is given in inches, and all parts are simple rectangles, it's easy to determine size even without doing a swatch. I did the complete set for a great grand baby, using blue yarn accented with a blue,brown,white combo yarn. I also turned back the top corners to the outside.
