Felted and Mended Afghan

Lion Brand® Fishermen's Wool® - Wool-Ease®

16 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with A When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. Blocks are knit as rectangles. During felting process, Blocks will become Square.
2. Embroidery is worked onto felted Blocks, then Blocks are sewn together to make Afghan.
3. Pattern is designed to encourage creativity. Embroidered motifs are meant to be freeform, simple shapes. Change the scale of the motifs or embroider more or fewer stitches to vary the motifs. If desired, simple shapes such as squares or triangles can be outlined with masking tape on surface of Afghan, and embroidery worked within the outlined shapes.

BLOCK (make 12)
With A, cast on 76 sts.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 21 in. (53.5 cm) from beginning.
Bind off.

Wash Blocks by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull into shape. Felted Blocks should measure about 14 x 14 in. (35.5 x 35.5 cm). Allow to dry completely.
With B, embroider straight st shapes onto each felted Block as desired. In our Afghan, we embroidered square, rectangle, triangle, chevron, and diamond shapes.
Arrange embroidered Blocks on a flat surface in 3 rows of 4 Blocks each. From RS, with C, sew straight sts back and forth between Blocks to join. Weave in ends.

Felted and Mended Afghan Reviewed by Kathy Anneken on 2013-05-24 *****
I loved this pattern and the felting experience. It is a bit scary to see all that beautiful stockinette stitching go into hot water for shrinking. I do recommend felting all 12 pieces together for equal results. I enjoyed the freedom of creativity on the squares. I used cardboard for my motifs outline with masking tape and straight pins. This afghan is heavy weight, soft and warm with a homespun feel. If you want to make it larger,Lion Brand recommends adding 8 squares (4 across and 4 down.) Thanks.
