GAUGE:

11 sts + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in k2, p2 Rib. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

K2, p2 Rib Row 1: *K2, p2; rep from * across. Row 2: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts. Rep Row 2 for k2, p2 Rib.

HAT
Cast on 56 sts. Work 26 rows in k2, p2 Rib.
Row 27 (Dec Row): *K2, p2, k2, p2tog; rep from * across row – 49 sts.
Row 28: *K1, p2, k2, p2; rep from * across row.
Row 29 (Dec Row): *k2, p2tog, k2, p1; rep from * – 42 sts.
Row 30: *K1, p2; rep from * across row.
Row 31: *K1, p2tog; rep from * across row. – 28 sts. Cut yarn, leaving an 8 in. (20.5 cm) tail. Thread tail through sts of last row and pull to gather. Knot tightly to secure.

EARFLAP (make 2)
Cast on 10 sts. Work 4 rows in Garter st (k every row).
Row 5 (Dec Row): K2tog, k 6, k2tog – 8 sts.
Rows 6 and 7: Knit.
Rep Rows 5-7 twice more.
Next Row: K1, k2tog, k1.
Next Row: Rep last row. – 2 sts.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Braids (make 2)
Cut 3 lengths of yarn, each 12 in. (30.5 cm). Knot lengths tog at one end and sew to Earflap. Braid lengths for about 10 in. (25.5. cm), then knot. Trim ends evenly.
Pom-pom
Following package directions, make a pom-pom.
Sew back seam of Hat. Fold up 3 1/2 in. (9 cm) for brim. Sew Earflaps to sides of Hat at fold line. Sew pom-pom to top of Hat.
Weave in ends.
