GAUGE:

10 stitches = 4 in. (10 cm) in Shawl pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

SHAWL
Cast on 63 stitches.
Row 1: (Knit 3, purl 3) until the last 3 stitches, knit 3.
Row 2: (Purl 3, knit 3) until the last 3 stitches, purl 3.
Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures about 60 in. (152.5 cm). Bind off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

Heartfelt Shawl Reviewed by Karen Semones on 2013-12-19 **
I wish I had read the reviews before starting this also. When you cast on 63 per instructions and follow the two row pattern, you end up with a wide rib that is only wide enough if you stretch it since it draws up when ribbing. The edges curl under also. If casting on 63 stitches, you need to just repeat Row 1 every row to get it to look like the picture. Also, when I click on the pictures on patterns to Zoom they still aren't large enough to see pattern clearly.
