GAUGE:

5 (dc, ch 2, dc) + 8 rows = 6 in. (15 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Tranquil Comfort Shawl - from a Beginner Reviewed by C Vogel on 2014-06-05 *****
I was given this shawl (in another color) and decided to return to crocheting myself after 30 some years.

This is relatively easy once you get going but I had my shawl and my friend as references. If you are a new or old beginner I would try a small piece to get all the instructions down. The 3 skeins are plenty so practice first. The first half of my shawl is distinctly different from the second so I will keep my first attempt.

Also, another type of yarn might be easier for a beginner. It probably won't be as lush as this product but it is a thought for ultra beginners who want to make prayer shawls. It was easy once you figure it out...just remember to keep counting and check your work each row. I also wish I had known that tightening regularly (if not continually )has a much more finished look than just crocheting.

There is help on YouTube with the terms in the instructions and actual videos of connecting with the slip stitch.

Blessings!
