GAUGE: 8 half double crochet + 8 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Chain 42.
Row 1: Half double crochet in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across – 40 stitches
Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Half double crochet in each stitch across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 61 in. (155 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Weave in ends. |

| I have made this shawl before, but slightly differently. I crocheted it length-wise rather than width-wise and got the same results, but it seemed to go more quickly. By making it length-wise, you can measure it according to how you would like it's length to be, and feeling the warmth of the shawl so that that warmth will transfer to the person to whom you give it. You can fringe it or not as it suits you.
