GAUGE:
6 hdc + 5 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Urban Granny Dog Sweater Reviewed by Lisa Ingram on 2012-12-30
I took this pattern and adapted it a bit, as I wanted to use worsted weight yarn I had used in another project and wanted a thinner sweater anyway. I thought it was great to be able to customize the size; for example since my dog is part dachshund she has a longer body that is typical for a dog her size, so I was able to make the top part sized Large, but the little square underneath a size Medium. I also changed the neck a bit since I knew she would be wearing a collar and leash when she would wear this and didn't want all that bulk there. Definitely an easy pattern.
