GAUGE:

18 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Shell Lace pattern with larger needle and 2 strands of yarn held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sk2p Slip 1 as if to knit, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over – 2 sts decreased. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog. PATTERN STITCHES Seed Stitch (odd number of sts) Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1. Rep Row 1 for Seed St. Shell Lace (multiple of 11 sts + 1) Row 1 and all WS Rows: Purl. Row 2 (RS): K2tog, *k5, yo, k1, yo, k2, sk2p; rep from * end last rep with ssk instead of sk2p. Row 4: K2tog, *k4, yo, k3, yo, k1, sk2p; rep from * end last rep with ssk instead of sk2p. Row 6: K2tog, *k3,yo, k5, yo, sk2p; rep from * end last rep with ssk instead of sk2p. Row 8: K2tog, *k2, yo, k1, yo, k5, sk2p; rep from * end last rep with ssk instead of sk2p. Row 10: K2tog, *k1, yo, k3, yo, k4, sk2p; rep from * end last rep with ssk instead of sk2p. Row 12: K2tog, *yo, k5, yo, k3, sk2p; rep from * end last rep with ssk instead of sk2p. Rep Rows 1–12 for Shell Lace pattern. K1, p1 Rib (even number of sts) Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of row. Rep Row 1 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES:

1) Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle, as if working on straight needles.
2) Shrug is worked with 2 strands of yarn held tog throughout.

SHRUG
With circular needle and 2 strands of yarn held tog, cast on 177 sts.
Work in Seed st for 2 in. (5 cm), end with a RS row.
Beg with Row 1, work Rows 1-12 of Shell Lace pattern 7 times.
Next Row: Purl.
Work in Seed st for 2 in. (5 cm). Bind off.

FINISHING
Cuffs
With RS facing and 2 strands of yarn held tog, pick up and knit 52 sts evenly spaced along one short edge of Shrug. Work in K1, p1 Rib for 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm). Bind off. Rep on other short edge for second cuff.
Fold Shrug in half, bringing long edges tog. Beg at one short end, sew about 11 in. (28 cm) tog for sleeve. Rep on opposite end for second sleeve.
Weave in ends.
