GAUGE: 4 1/2 V-sts + 6 1/2 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in V-st pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Ch 100.
Row 1: (Dc, ch 1, dc) in 5th ch from hook (V-st made), *sk next 2 ch, V-st in next ch; rep from * across to last 2 ch, sk next ch, dc in last ch.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), turn, V-st in each ch-1 sp across, dc in top of turning ch – 32 V-sts and 1 dc at each edge.
Rows 3–50: Rep Row 2.
Do not fasten off.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, turn, sc in each dc and ch-1 sp across, 3 sc in top of turning ch; pivot to work in ends of rows along side, work sc evenly spaced along side; pivot to work along opposite side of foundation ch, 3 sc in first ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 3 sc in last ch; pivot to work in ends of rows along opposite side, work sc evenly spaced along side, 2 sc in same st as first sc; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2 (picot edging): *Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook (picot made), sk next sc, sl st in next 2 sc; rep from * around sl st in more or fewer sts at each corner to ensure that a picot is centered at each corner. Fasten off.
FINISHING
