GAUGE:

EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Diagram is for half the bat. Cut out diagram and trace one side onto the felted piece, then flip over the dotted line to trace other half of the bat. Diagram should be enlarged onto a piece of letter-size paper.

BAT
Cast on 48 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 25 in. (63.5 cm). Bind off.

FELTING
Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. Gently pull into shape and allow to dry flat.

FINISHING
With chalk, trace bat pattern onto felted piece. Cut out on marked line.
Fold wire in half and twist at fold to form a small loop. Center wire onto wrong side of felted piece, with loop extending above bat’s head. Shape each end of wire to follow wing contours. Whipstitch over wire to hold in place.
