Nature's Bounty Afghan

Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice®

GAUGE:

18 sts + 14 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

picot: Ch 3, sl st in last sc made.

NOTES:

Afghan is worked in Tunisian crochet (also known as afghan stitch), in which each row is worked twice. In the first pass, worked in one direction, loops are added to the hook; in the return pass, worked in the opposite direction, loops are worked off the hook.

AFGHAN
With afghan hook and A, ch 37.
Foundation Row (forward pass): Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and draw up a lp (2 lps on hook), *keeping all lps on hook, draw up a lp in next ch; rep from * across. Do not turn.
Foundation Row (return pass): Yo and draw through first lp, *yo and draw through 2 lps; rep from * until 1 lp remains (this lp becomes the first stitch of the next row) – 36 sts.
Row 1 (forward pass): Sk first vertical bar of previous row (against edge of piece), insert hook under next vertical bar of previous row, yo and draw up a lp, *keeping all lps on hook, insert hook under next vertical bar and draw up a lp; rep from * across.
Row 1 (return pass): Yo and draw through first lp, *yo and draw through 2 lps; rep from * until 1 lp remains (this lp becomes the first st of the next row).
Rep both passes of Row 1 until a total of 205 rows have been worked.
Last Row: Sk first vertical bar, sl st in each vertical bar across. Fasten off.

Cross-Stitch
Note:
Embroider cross stitches onto panels following Chart with indicated colors.
Work Chart Rows 1-69 once, then rep Rows 2-69 of cross-stitch design along each panel, as shown on chart.

FINISHING
Join Panels

Note: Use standard crochet hook for joining.
First Panel Edging: From RS and working in ends of rows along long side of Panel, join A with sc in end of first row; *ch 5, sk next 3 rows, sc in end of next row; rep from * across long side working last sc in end of last row. Work edging along only one side of First Panel.
Join Next Panel: From RS, arrange long edge of Second Panel next to edging of First Panel. Join A with sc in end of first row of Second Panel; *ch 2, drop lp from hook, insert hook in 3rd ch of corresponding ch-5 sp of First Panel, pick up dropped lp and draw through, ch 2, sk next 3 rows of Second Panel, sc in end of next row; rep from * across to join panels and working last sc in end of last row. Work edging along rem long side of Second Panel, in same way as edging was worked on First Panel. Join rem panels in same way. Do not work edging on unjoined side of last panel.
Border
Note:
Use standard crochet hook for border.
Rnd 1: From RS and working in ends of rows along long side of Afghan; join A with *sc in corner of Afghan, ch 5, sk next 4 rows, sc in end of next row; rep from * across to next corner working last sc in end of last row, ch 3; working in sts along short end of Afghan; sc in first st, **ch 5, sk next 4 sts, sc in next st; rep from ** across to next corner working ch-5 over each panel join and with last sc in last st, ch 3; rep from * once more; join with sl st in first sc.

Nature's Bounty Afghan Reviewed by Lloyann Curtis on 2012-09-08 *****
I love this afghan. I have made it twice. Do not let the "experienced" level scare you away from attempting this pattern. I found this afghan to be moderately easy. It is time consuming, but well worth it.
