Le Chic Beret

Lion Brand® Cotton-Ease®

16 sc = 4 in. (10 cm) with larger hook.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

With larger hook, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in ring.
Place marker for beg of rnd and move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sc.
Rnd 3: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 18 sc.
Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 24 sc.
Rnds 5-22: Sc in each sc around, increasing 6 sc evenly spaced in each rnd - 132 sc.
Rnd 23: Sc in each sc around.
Rep Rnd 23 for 2 in. (5 cm). Sl st in next sc. Fasten off.

With smaller hook, ch 6.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - 5 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn; working in back loops only, sc in each sc across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 20 in. (51 cm) from beg.
Fasten off.

Sew short edges of Band together. Sew one long edge of Band around edge of Beret, easing edge of Beret to fit. Weave in ends.

Worked out the main part of pattern thanks to the 'reviewer' who was nice enough to write down the specific stitch directions- I couldn't understand the pattern otherwise. As before mentioned, the band works out too long, -but after shortening it about two inches the hat came together beautifully and looks just like the picture.
